Woodstock Events – Woodstock, Illinois
With a population of under 20,000 this Illinois community hosts a number of exciting opportunities for entertainment and historic rememberances. The Woodstock Opera House is a classic example of Victorian construction with it’s interior stencils setting of a fabulous background for the concerts held there now and in the past. Built in 1889 the theater has run continuously since it opened, quite a statement for any theater!
Walk down the sidewalks of the downtown area and you will understand why, with it’s cobblestone streets and beautifully restored 19th century buidlings, the downtown was named by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to its annual list of a "Dozen Distinctive Destinations."
The county courthouse sits on the edge of the city square allowing the square itself to be used for social gatherings such as the farmers market, ice cream socials and band concerts. During the summer months there is live entertainment on the square every Saturday night. What a fabulous way to bring back the community feeling and pride in a community than to share this with the visitors that come to the area.
Woodstock Folk Festival is another celebration in town on an annual basis, this celebration is usually the end of July but check with the city to make sure of the date. It runs from noon until 6 PM, what a delightful day!
Fanciers of folk music, storytelling and sing-alongs gather on the first Saturday of each month at the Masthouse (actually a private home in downtown Woodstock). Entrance is $4 per person (or what you can afford) and visitors are invited to join in the conversation and refreshments at a "sharing table" and are requested to bring a snack or treat to share.
Another music event is the Off Square Music, with several folk-music concerts each month and open mic night twice a month, attracting performers from Chicago and Milwaukee.
Being just 60 miles northwest of Chicago gives this community a wonderful opportunity to attract some very talented entertainers for the enjoyment of everyone. Visit the community and enjoy the hospitality and warmth offered in conjunction with some great music!
