Built in 1897 on the site chosen by Stephen A. Douglas the United States Custom House (now the Cairo Custom House Museum) has served the community in a number of different capacities. It has been the U.S. Post Office, Customs, the Weather Bureau, The Federal Court Room and the Cairo Police Department.

On the first floor of the building there are Civil War and local historical items. The Halliday Art Gallery and individual display rooms are located on the second floor.

On display is a desk used by General U.S. Grant, an 1865 Cairo fire wagon, a scale model of the gunboat U.S.S. Cairo, a historic hamburger/popcorn wagon and more. On the first floor you will see the U.S. Post Office which was third in importance in the nation at the time it was built because of the mail connections to and from the emerging West. Imagine how important those letters were to the families and friends separated by so many miles and in totally different living conditions.

The fireplaces in the building were built for ventilation rather than heat (although heat was welcome in the winter too). The interior wood is black and white walnut. Floors and hallways are white marble and black slate. The uprights in stairway banisters are made of iron with black walnut railings.

Location: 1400 Washington, Cairo, Illinois 62914

Phone: 618-734-9632

Hours: 10-12 & 1-3 Monday through Friday. Other tours can be set by making an appointment. Call Louise Ogg at 618-776-5407 or Monica Smith at the Cairo Public Library 618-734-1840.

Alto Vineyards – Alto Pass, Illinois

Did you realize that Illinois has some great vineyards that are waiting for you to visit and taste their products? The Alto Vineyards is owned and operated by the Renzaglia family and is located at the foothills of the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. They have two tasting rooms for your convenience. One here at the vineyard and another in Champaign, close to the University of Illinois campus. The one in Champaign opened in 2001.

The vineyard first got its start in 1985. In 1986 they sold the first vintage of grapes to the Lynfred Winery in the Chicago area. Back in those days there were only 38 acres of commercial grapes being grown in the entire state of Illinois. Two years later Alto Vineyards released its first 1,500 gallons of Illinois wine. It was such a delight that it sold out in just 3 days. With only 6 other wineries in the entire state the desire for Illinois grown and produced wine was running high.

The winemaker for the Alto Vineyards and Winery is Paul Renzaglia. Mr. Renzaglia has been awarded the "Life Time Achievement Award" in 2009. This award is given to someone who exemplifies excellence within the wine industry in all aspects of the grape and wine business. With 20 years of experience and a continued devotion to the art of winemaking you can count on getting a great product from the winery.

The wines available from Alto are:
Shelf Talkers
•Alto Festa
•Chambourcin
•Chancellor
•Chardonel
•Cherry Berry
•Cherry Wine
•Dawg House Red
•Heartland Blush
•Heartland Port
•Heartland Red
•Rosso Classico
•Shawnee Gold
•Traminette
•Vidal Blanc
•Villard Blanc
•Wiener Dog White

The winery has two major festivals for those that enjoy great wine and great music. One is the SpringFest and the other ColorFest. As well as the two major festivals for the celebration of wine they offer free music at the vineyards from June through September. Stop over; enjoy some great wine and music!

In Champaign there is the Music Among the Vines where you can listen to great music, whether it is a local band or a nationally known one, they come to share their talents with you as you enjoy the wines available. So, regardless of which location you are closest to you will be able to enjoy great wine and entertainment provided by the Alto Vineyards.

There are four creeks which come together in the canyon at Bell Smith Springs; and even when the creeks are parched there are a dozen ice-cold spring pools which never go dry. The unique hydrology of the canyon contributes to its vegetative diversity. There are over 700 species of plants which grow at Bell Smith Springs.

Bell Smith Springs is a an essential destination for anyone interested in native ecology and local history. It is designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Park Service, a Natural Area by the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, and a recreation area by the U. S. Forest Service.

Although some of the animals that once lived in the area are gone the bobcat, turkey, deer, fox, a plethora of songbirds and other animals are still glimpsed at Bell Smith Springs.

Millstone Bluff National Register Site – Eddyville, Illinois An archeology site on a hilltop, along route 147, east northeast of Vienna just west of Glendale near Eddyville.

A natural formation, the bluff is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Millstone Bluff is one of numerous sites natiowide to have its "address restricted" by the Register. These sites are often sensitive to attention and visits from the public for various reasons. It is one of two Registered Historic Places in Pope County.

The bluff is home to a prehistoric Native American settlement used in by Mississippian cultures during the Woodland period. The settlement site is little more than depressions sitting atop the bluff which lies within the Shawnee National Forest. The United States Forest Service controls an interpretive trail to the site. There isn’t a great deal to see other than the natural remains of the Mississippian settlement but the bluff contains a stonebox cemetery, a rock art site and a Late Woodland stone fort.

Garden of the Gods/Hicks Dome/High Knob – Harrisburg, Illinois. The three areas are those that should be viewed at the same time. Garden of the Gods is located in southern Illinois in the Shawnee National Forest. The Wilderness area is over 320 million years old and covers over 3,300 acres of beautiful old growth forest.. The sediment rock in this area is over 4 miles deep and the fractured bedrock has created some interesting rock formations that represent various objects.

Garden of the Gods has two main trail systems. The best known trail is the Observation Trail. It follows a .25 mile stone path that leads to some spectacular overlooks of the Garden of the Gods Wilderness area and views of unusual rock formations. This is an interpretive trail that has some interesting history about the geology of this area. There are other trails that lead to places such as Indian Point, Anvil Rock, Mushroom Rock and Big H. These trails combine for about 5.5 miles and are interconnecting. There are maps available at the park which is open year round.

The second main trail that goes through this area is the River-to-River Trail. The trail enters the east end of the park from High Knob just below the camping area and proceeds west crossing the blacktop to the Observation Trail area. The River-to-River Trail then proceeds south below the rock formations, before bearing west again. It continues for 8 miles to Herod.

Getting There

From Exit 54 at Interstate 57 and Illinois 13, drive 25 miles east on Illinois 13 to US 45 in Harrisburg. Turn right onto US 45 and drive south 1 mile to Illinois 34. Turn left onto Illinois 34 and drive 16 miles to Karbers Ridge Road. Turn left onto Karbers Ridge Road and drive 3 miles east to Illinois 10 (Garden of the Gods Road). Turn left for about 1 mile. Turn left into Garden of the Gods Recreation area.

From the south take Illinois 1 North to Cadiz Road. Turn left and continue west 6 miles to Karbers Ridge Road. Turn left and continue west for 4 miles to Illinois 10 (Garden of the Gods Road). Turn left for about 1 mile. Turn left into Garden of the Gods Recreation area.

Hicks Dome was created by a volcano nearly 150,000,000 although it never broke the surface causing the bulging (crypto-explosion). Pilots flying over this hill are amazed to see the shape of a volcano from the air.

The region is sedimentary rocks as well as some igenious outcroppings with many fauts and unusual surface formations to see.

High Knob is a unique area that you can drive to the top, view the area, explore the trails that go along the cliffs. Bring a flashllight to view the inside of the caves. Beginning your hike at the Garden of the Gods is a good place to start.

The Poor House (The Pauper Farm) – Harrisburg, IL is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Poor House, built in 1877 with an addition in 1904 was the effort of the culture of that era to take care of the poor.

By 1839 the Almshouse method of public welfare was introduced in which a building would be built on county land and pauper labor would farm it. One person could then oversee the operation. This farm originally containing 175 acres was built under the Almshouse Law using log buildings for many years until the brick building was constructed. The idealistic notion, that people would gladly work for their subsistence, soon met reality. The Poor Farm became an orphanage, a jail, an insane asylum, and a place for refugees, i.e. a social dumping ground for the outcast and deplored.

What started as an effort to help the county poor became another good idea that didn’t work. The farm ceased operation sometime after 1950. It now serves as the Saline County Museum and contains such things as Robert Ingersolls desk, a letter from William Jenning Bryan, an 1853 newspaper telling of the Trail of Tears and much more.

Tours at 2:00 PM each day except Monday $3. for adults. Personal Tours are $5 any other time.

Location: 1600 Feazel Street

The DuQuoin State Fairgrounds showcases agriculture and youth, educates the public about agriculture, as well as entertaining the public.

The fairgrounds offer you everything from harness racing to midway rides. The agricultural building will wow you with the wide array of products to you to see. There are 1200 beautiful acres with 12 lakes and ponds (salvaged strip pits), and 30 miles of winding roadways, not to mention the showplace mansion and stables, the grandstand, and the mile oval track that yearly showcases the World Trotting Derby. In a report of the Du Quoin history, probably dated around 1948, a description of the fairgrounds stated, "The grounds of the Du Quoin State Fair are of the finest to be found. Fishing is good, the picnic spots are always full, and the drives are one of our community showplaces."

The Du Quoin State Fair has been billed as a "state" fair since its beginning, even though during its first 63 years it was privately owned. Today W.R. Hayes’ foresight has proved accurate once again. The Du Quoin State Fair, now owned and operated by the State of Illinois, is truly a "state" fair.

Bald Knob Cross in Alto Pass, Illinois is a symbol of faith built by contributions from across the country. This cross stands 111 ft. tall. When illuminated at night, it can be seen over on area of 7,500 square miles.

Located in the Southern Illinois Ozarks the site is the highest elevation in the area. It is surrounded by the rugged scenic beauty of the Shawnee National Forest, Bald Knob rises more than 700 feet above the valley below.

The cross was completed in 1963. The base of the cross is made of Illinois marble and the upper portion is covered by reinforced steel porcelain panels. The cross can withstand winds of up to 150 miles per hour. It is hollow, and visitors were originally able to go to the top. This was discontinued at some point before 1982. (suspected to be due to insurance issues and the condition of the interior stairs.)

There is a church service at the location every year on Easter. The site is also used for other religious activities such as religious events by various denominations and Christian biker gangs, etc.

There is a visitor center at the site, but it is not always open so don’t depend on it being a resource for information.

Location: 3630 Bald Knob Rd, Alto Pass, IL
